Did you know the glyptodont and armadillo are alike? Because they can curl into a ball to defend itself, but a glyptodont is the size of a car, and an armadillo is the size of a palm of someone’s hand. The glyptodonts were about 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and 11 feet (3.4 meters) long. They had huge, round bony shells on their backs. Some of them may have weighed more than two tons! These big beasts moved too slowly to outrun predators. How did they stay safe? They tucked their heads and feet under their shells. This hiding trick kept the species alive for millions of years until about 10,000 years ago. Scientists think glyptodonts went extinct because of early humans. They hunted glyptodonts for meat and may have used their shells as shelter.
